For a foreign brand entering the Czech Republic, the hardest part of the AI shift has been that you couldn’t see it. You localise your site, you invest in content, and everyone tells you AI is reshaping how buyers find companies, but your analytics gave you no way to check whether it was true for your business. That changed on 13 May 2026, when Google added a dedicated AI Assistant channel to the default channel group in Google Analytics 4. It reached most accounts by early June.
Google Analytics now provides a dedicated way to measure and analyze traffic originating from popular AI assistants.
GA4 tags a session with the medium ai-assistant when the referrer matches a recognised assistant. At launch that meant ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude; the list has since widened. For the first time you can open your own account and see, in a number rather than a headline, how many people arrive after asking an AI about your category.
Here is the counter-intuitive part, and the reason this matters for a market-entry budget. AI-referred traffic is still tiny — a fraction of a percent of sessions for most sites — yet it converts above ordinary organic search, and it is growing several times over year on year. Volume says ignore it; value says the opposite.
The behaviour explains why. Someone who clicks a random Google result is often still figuring out what they want. Someone arriving from an AI answer has already had the problem named and the shortlist narrowed — the assistant filtered the options and named a company. They land on your site much closer to a decision. For a brand still building local trust, that is the most valuable visitor you can get, and now you can price it.
ChatGPT referrals convert at around 7%, ahead of organic search — while AI traffic is still a small slice for most sites.
The channel is useful, but reading it as the full picture is a mistake anywhere — and more so in Czechia. It under-reports on three fronts, and the third is specific to this market.
| Blind spot | What happens | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity & some tools | Fall into Referral, not AI Assistant | Your real AI volume is higher than shown |
| Google AI answers | AI Overviews / AI Mode counted as organic | Google’s AI, live in Czechia since late 2025, is invisible in this channel |
| Seznam AI Assistant | Not a recognised AI source in GA4 | The local engine many Czechs use won’t be isolated at all |
Seznam is the point most foreign brands miss. The Czech Republic is one of the few European markets with a strong domestic search engine, and Seznam now shows its own AI answers. Google’s channel will never break that out for you. So the AI Assistant row is a floor, not a ceiling — a reason to look closer, not to relax.
The risk is not that AI traffic is small. The risk is the wrong conclusion drawn from a small number: “AI is taking clicks, organic is falling, so cut the content and localisation spend.” It is a tidy line of reasoning and an expensive one.
The catch is how AI works. For ChatGPT, Gemini or Seznam’s assistant to recommend you, they need something to draw on — your site, your Czech-language pages, your reviews and facts. A brand that cuts local content because AI takes clicks is cutting off the very source the AI cites. If you are entering the market, that source barely exists yet, so this is the last budget line to trim.
Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, and set the primary dimension to Session default channel group. Since May 2026 you will find an AI Assistant channel that groups sessions from recognised AI assistants. Add conversions and value columns next to sessions, because those decide whether the traffic is worth anything.
Google added the AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026 and it reached most accounts by early June. It tags sessions with the medium ai-assistant when the referrer matches a recognised assistant — ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude at launch, with more added since. It only counts forward from activation and does not rebuild history.
Because the channel under-reports. Perplexity and some tools fall into Referral, one source can split across several channels, and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as organic search. In Czechia, Seznam’s AI Assistant is not isolated at all. Your true AI influence is higher than the channel shows.
No. For an assistant to recommend you, it needs a source to cite, and that source is your website and content. If you are entering the market, that footprint is still small, so cutting it removes the material AI would use to surface you. Measure with the AI Assistant channel and let conversion data guide the budget instead of headlines.
